The Frog Invasion
My 3-D Pieces
The Idea
For my 3-D project, I knew I wanted to do something fun and uplifting. So, themed by my love for frogs, I decided to create tiny clay frogs. However, I wanted it to be a little more special than just simple frogs. I was inspired after reading Mrs. Baranszky report card comment to try a public art installation and decided to do that with the frogs! I chose 5 teachers who I wanted to give the frogs to and decided to customize them for each person. The fros would look the same but each one would have a small object on its head that symbolized something about the teacher.
The Process
I chose to use air dry clay because it is easy to mend and takes very little time to dry. Since I didn't have a lot of time left to complete this project, it was the ideal choice for me. I sculpted the frogs, creating different sized circles, attaching them to each other, and carving out the shape of the frog body. Afterwards, I would smooth them down with a sponge so there was very little bumps. They still ended up having a little bit of a rough texture but it worked because it resembled frog skin. Once they were dry, I took artist grade acrylic paint and coated its surface in different shades of green. I chose to have them all green for consistency but each one is a different shade of green so there was some uniqueness. For the facial details, I used Posca paint pen. Lastly, I coated them in gloss glaze medium to give them a shine that resembles real frogs. For the small objects, I painted and sculpted those separately and then attached them using a glue gun.
The Frogs
This is Sam and he lives in Mrs. Kim's room. His object is a tiny book as Mrs. Kim is an English teacher and she Ioves to read. His favorite book is probably some classic piece like Jane Austen.
This is Patricia and she lives in Mr. Mitchell's room. AKA the band room. She has a tiny piano which she loves to play because Mr. Mitchell is one of the music teachers. Her favorite song is any jazz song.
This is Gerald and he lives in Mr. Neil's room. He wear an orange on his head because Mr. Neil always has fruit in his water bottle. He loves going to disneyland and eating pizza.
This is Steven and he lives in Mr. Barnim's room. He wears a coffee cup on his head so he can easily drink coffee whenever. Just like Mr. Barnim, he has a slight caffeine addiction.
This is Sammy and she lives in Mrs. MacGregor's room. She wears a star on her head because everyone is star and theatre is a place to shine!
