Artist Study - Emily Carr

Emily Carr is a Canadian painter and writer born on December 13th, 1871 in Victoria, BC and died March 2nd, 1945. Emily Carr is said to be one of the most original Canadian painted of the 21st century. She was also one of the major female artists in both North America and Europe of that period of 1930s. She specialized in scenes from the lives and rituals of Native Americans. Many of her expressionistic paintings represent totem poles and other artifacts of Native American culture. She also showed her awareness of Canadian nature through the number of works representing the British Colombian rain forest. Fun fact about her, she breed sheepdogs and had various cats and dogs as pets, as well as a monkey named Woo in the early 1930s.

Her paintings in order, Skedans, Beacon Hill Park, War Canoe, Kispiox Village, Big Eagle Skidegate, Autumn in France.

In her early years, Carr painted using exclusively watercolors, ink, pencil and charcoal as her sketching mediums. She worked mostly with still life and landscape, which she rendered in her unique art style using light, muted palettes. I enjoy the whimsical feel to all her paintings like when I look at one, I feel like I'm apart of it. I feel like I'm present in the scenarios she draws. I like how there are no strict lines visible in her paintings, which makes the paintings feel more free.
